More than 200 spine surgeons from across Europe and beyond came together in Bastia to discuss the future of minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery. The energy and momentum of these days were tangible – a field in motion.
One message became unmistakably clear throughout the meeting: endoscopy is here to stay. Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) in particular is experiencing remarkable momentum right now. The continuously expanding range of indications that can be addressed with UBE is driving enormous interest among spine surgeons looking for less invasive, tissue-sparing, and highly versatile surgical solutions.

Standardization: The Next Critical Step

Alongside the growing enthusiasm, Bastia also made clear where the path forward must lead: standardization is the community’s next major challenge. Standardized techniques, workflows, instrumentation, and educational concepts are essential to further increase safety, reproducibility, and quality in daily clinical practice. Only through a shared understanding of best practices can UBE reach its full potential –not just in specialized centers, but broadly and sustainably in clinical routine.

Education as the Foundation

Equally important is the question of training. There was clear consensus in Bastia: structured training programs, a stepwise adoption approach, experienced mentors, hands-on lab sessions, and the opportunity for direct case observation are indispensable. Only through these elements can the learning curve be safely mastered and UBE reliably integrated into everyday clinical practice.

Events like NSpine are therefore far more than specialist congresses – they are essential platforms for education, collaboration, innovation, and hands-on learning that will help shape the next generation of spine surgery.

A Community on the Move

The energy, openness, and motivation of the international spine community in Bastia was palpable. Surgeons from across Europe and beyond – traveling via Frankfurt, arriving on the shores of the Mediterranean – shared the same drive: to understand where the field is heading and to actively contribute to its evolution.

Moments like these make it clear: we are together witnessing and shaping a major evolution in spine surgery. Bastia was a powerful testament to that.
